What’s the difference between coaching and psychotherapy?
While both help people feel more fulfilled and effective, most coaches aren’t qualified to practice psychotherapy and most therapists aren’t coaches. Coaching focuses on what a person wants to create and how best to achieve it (through new actions). Psychotherapy focuses on a persons problems and how to change distressing thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.
Cove Wellness coaching Approach is a holistic five-phased approach
Partnership is the foundation of our approach to working with clients. Like a trusted colleague we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you as we together look out over the path you’d like to take. Similar to an athletic coach, we are with you each step on that path, providing support and opportunities for learning, growth and achievement. While each persons and companies path is different, the content of each engagement follows a similar framework.
We work with every client to:
I) Identify Desired Results what do you
want to accomplish most?
II) Assessment - Assess current reality
III) Intervention / Initiative - Create
appropriate development initiatives as
needed.
IV) Create Custom Action Plan - Develop a
custom, attainable action plan, which
may change weekly or monthly.
V) Alignment & Accountability -
Experiment, practice, get feedback,
while creating specific and relevant
support structures, which reinforce
new behaviors and ensures the desired
results will be met.

A description of what generally happens in each stage follows
Identify Desired Results - we talk about results in our first conversation with you. What do you want to get out of working with us? What benefits will you or your organization derive? What kinds of learning and assessment activities will be used? What will success look like and how will it be measured?
In this critical phase we also discuss the parameters of our relationship including commitments, program length, costs, payment methods, and how to handle conflicts if they arise.
These initial conversations are critical in the development of
targeting specific goals, outcomes & concerns. We spend the initial sessions clarifying
what's important to you, refining your desired results, and exploring personal values. This sets the stretch goals you’ll work towards during your coaching relationship.
Assess Current Reality
Next we evaluate your current reality where things stand now compared to your desired results. We get a clear picture of your world as it is today! An important part of this stage is rating your close personal relationships & support structures. Are they where you want them to be? If not, what would improvement look like? Clarity about current reality sets up your learning trajectory. For the rest of your sessions, you’ll create what you want by narrowing the gap between where you currently are and where you want to end up.
Develop an Action Plan
Your action plan contains specific activities that pertain to what you want to achieve. This usually includes a mix of reading, writing exercises, dietary & eating habits and conversations designed to have you reflect on topics such as leadership, learning, creativity, spirituality, relationship building, goal setting, and interpersonal communication, and limitless possibilities.
In most cases, you’ll focus on only the one or two areas that will have the greatest impact on your desired results. Working with your most important areas keeps you from getting overwhelmed with too much information. As you learn, you’ll simultaneously be experimenting and practicing with the new information.
Experiment, Practice, and Get Feedback
Each week you’ll be taking actions to achieve your desired results. We call this experimentation and practice because you’ll be trying out new and unfamiliar behaviors. Most plans for personal and organizational change fail at this point because they take people out of their comfort zone with no support.
As you practice well be with you every step of the way to discuss challenges and wins. Feedback on your progress is very important. Not only will we provide feedback, but you’ll also get it from your key relationships. Together well decide the most appropriate methods given your circumstances.
Develop Support Structures
As you discover new ways of thinking and acting that serve you better, its important to create structures to ensure you keep practicing them. This is the key to your new behavior eventually becoming second nature. Common support structures include ongoing follow up interviews, coaching calls, structured meetings & assignments, and open dialogue with colleagues, friends, family and your community. We work with you to create these structures and put them into action.
