Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a system of medicine that has been used for thousands of years to promote health and treat disease. It has been reported that more than 1 million Americans currently receive acupuncture each year. In TCM, each person is viewed as a unified energy system, with the body and mind influencing and harmonizing each other. It takes into account the signs and symptoms that are reflective of the underlying cause. Often times numerous symptoms resolve simultaneously because the underlying cause is addressed, and the body is in a balanced state to heal itself. A Chinese medical diagnosis is based upon an examination and consultation, including an in-depth assessment of the tongue and pulse. Once a diagnosis is made, acupuncture points, herbal formulas, massage, exercise and nutrition counseling, and other modalities such as heat therapy, e-stim, moxa, cupping, and gua sha is used for treatment. TCM is a medicine of wellness, where the focus is on preserving and promoting health and longevity.

Herbal formulas have been utilized for centuries and are an integral modality used in TCM. Each herbal medicine prescription is a customized blend of many herbs tailored to the individual patient. Unlike western medications, the balance and interaction of all the ingredients are considered more important than the effect of individual ingredients. Chinese herbology often incorporates ingredients from all parts of plants, such as the leaf, stem, flower, root, and also ingredients from animals and minerals. As in all TCM practices, each person is unique and careful consideration is made to ingredients, dosage, and any known drug-herb interactions.
