Prostate Cancer

- Roughly a quarter of men diagnosed each year with cancer are diagnosed with prostate cancer

- Prostate cancer is one of the major killers in men and is now the most common cancer in America (excluding skin cancer). As of 2005 to date – over 230,000 men have been diagnosed and over 30,000 deaths are projected as a result.

- The success rate of medications has been estimated as low as 20-30%, according to pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline.

- Side effects of treatment include constipation, diarrhea, headache, lowered libido, nausea, trouble sleeping, bloating, indigestion, drowsiness, dryness and flu-like symptoms.

- Surgery is rife with its own possible side effects including damage to the urethra and heat damage from laser treatments.

If you’re wondering what you can do to prevent prostate cancer, you can help lower your risk by using various herbal extracts including Querticin and grape seed. If you find that you’re frequently getting up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, you can try taking Beta Sistosterol or saw palmetto to help alleviate this.

When you first start to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom that you possibly can reverse that need by using Beta Sitosterol or Saw Palmetto in conjunction with other nutrients. Prostate cancer is generally preventable if you take the proper steps early enough – including a proper diet rich in nutrients.

Enlarged Prostate

The prostate will commonly become enlarged as a man gets older, which is a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or benign prostatic hypertrophy.

As the body matures, the prostate grows in two stages. The first stage occurs early in puberty and results in the prostate doubling its size. The second stage generally begins around the age of 25 and may result in a BPH diagnosis much later in life. While prostate growth continues for the majority of your lifespan, it generally does not present a problem until the later years. Symptoms generally aren’t exhibited until after age 40 – but more than 50% of men in their 60s exhibit some signs, while as many as 90% of men in their 70s and 80s exhibit symptoms.

Prostate enlargement causes the surrounding tissue to stop it from expanding – which then results in the prostate pressing down on the bladder. This causes the bladder to contract even when it is not full – causing the urge to urinate more often and eventually preventing the bladder from emptying completely. This process causes most of the problems attributed to BPH.

Prostate enlargement has become a common sign of aging due to heightened life spans, with an estimated 375,000 hospital stays in the US alone attributed to BPH. However, it has not yet been determined if certain groups are more at risk, though it has been suggested that married men suffer from it more often than unmarried men.

The Danger of Pesticides

Organic foods are becoming ever more prevalent in today’s society. They are sold everywhere from health food stores, restaurants and even your local grocery store – with everything from organic fruit and vegetables to organic flour.

The major claimed benefit of consuming organic foods is that they are not processed, which helps to eliminate hydrogenated oils, preservatives and trans-fats from your diet. However, the other issue that has brought organic foods to the forefront is the use of pesticides on foods, since pesticides can cause many negative health effects, both acute and chronic. Organic foods are typically grown without using pesticides and the only fertilizer used is natural.

The reasons often cited for growing organic foods include better soil for future crops and the possible effects pesticides may have on the local water supply or animals raised on the farm.

There is growing evidence to suggest that organic foods are a healthy alternative to traditionally grown foods – due to the fact that pesticides are not readily eliminated. The Environmental Working Group has stated that while washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly prior to eating them is recommended – it does not completely eliminate all traces of pesticides from the food, due to the pesticides being absorbed internally.

Synthetic pesticides can basically be regarded as toxins – which means eating fruit or vegetables that have been treated with pesticides introduces these toxins into your body. Pesticides have been long suspected to have adverse effects on development as well as the nervous system. The EPA is currently studying the effects of a number of common pesticides on various bodily organs including the pancreas, pituitary gland and adrenal glands.

That said – it is not established that eating one fruit or vegetable that has been treated with pesticides will have immediate health consequences, but it is possible to derive long-term health benefits from eating only organic fruits and vegetables.

Herbs For Anxiety

Anxiety disorders can have a very negative effect on your overall wellbeing. If you suffer from an anxiety disorder, you may have considered taking medication to help treat it.

Approximately 19 million people in the United States alone suffer from an anxiety disorder, which makes it the most commonly reported mental disorder today. However, it is treatable with professional help and it is possible to overcome it altogether via therapy and relaxation techniques. In the cases that require medication, benzodiazepines such as Valium are generally prescribed due to the lower risk of side effects common to anti-depressant medications, though they have their own risk of addiction or other problems. This leads some people to seek healthy natural alternatives to prescription medications, which are readily available on the market today. They have been found to have very little in the way of side effects, though everyone reacts differently to natural remedies and it can take time to find the right balance of natural remedies for your particular condition.

Some of these alternatives include:

Passion Flower - used to treat hyperactivity, anxiety, nervous tension, insomnia and has also been found to have a role in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Lemon Balm – a nervous system restorative, also helps reduce blood pressure and helps soothe the digestive system.

Lavender – A natural relaxant and often used to help treat panic attacks.

Valerian – This is often used to treat insomnia and as a painkiller.

It may be that with treatment including therapy, relaxation exercises and support groups, you will find that you do not need to use medication after all. However, in the event that you do find medication may be helpful for you, since natural medications can be a viable option to explore with a much lower risk of side effects.

Constipation – A Common Sign of Toxic Colon

Chronic constipation is a common symptom that points to a toxic colon. Constipation is generally described as fecal matter becoming tightly packed in the colon, causing bowel movements to be difficult and incomplete. Straining for a bowel movement and producing dry, hardened feces is an indication of constipation. The feces tend to cling to the colon’s walls and prevent nutrients from being properly absorbed, as well as causing build-up of toxins and allowing harmful bacteria to gain a foothold. This also tends to cause the colon passage to narrow, often resulting in narrow stools that can be pencil-thin at times.

Other health problems arising from a toxic colon are known as diverticulosis and diverticulitis, respectively. Diverticulosis is a condition that occurs when weak spots in the colon walls form small “pouches” that bulge outwards, which are referred to as diverticulum. It has been estimated that approximately 10 percent of Americans over 40 have developed diverticulosis – a figure which increases to approximately 50 percent of Americans over 60. Furthermore, it is possible for diverticulum to become infected, a condition known as diverticulitis.

These issues along with constipation are typically attributed to a diet low in fiber.

Hypothyroidism and Hair Loss

A notable symptom of thyroid disorder is hair loss, which can easily be overlooked due to the commonality of hair loss in many people. Various areas of body function, affecting hair growth, strength and overall hair health, can potentially trigger hair loss.

While hair growth rate is affected by various factors including heredity, diet and exercise, hair does grow faster than other cells. 1/10 of your hair does not grow while the other 9/10 of your hair grows approximately ½ inch every month for 3 years.

Hypothyroidism can cause a noticeable difference in hair texture and shine. It is also known to cause women to lose hair in a pattern that resembles male hair loss patterns – where hair is lost at the temples and on top of the head. It is also possible to experience hair loss as a side effect of taking medication to regulate thyroid function.

Supporters of natural thyroid medication have proposed theories that the kidneys may play a role in hair growth. Furthermore, they have suggested that hair loss may be attributed to a number of factors, including: excessive testosterone production, poor metabolism, lack of nutrient absorption and thyroid hormone supplements causing the adrenal glands to be overstimulated.

Bowel Cleansing

Keeping the bowels clean and moving is a major step in regaining our health since the bowels are crucial in the elimination of toxins, especially those processed by the liver. [The liver dumps in to the bowel via the gall bladder. This is why one hears a lot about the bowels, and bowel cleansing. In severe cases, enemas and colonics may be needed to breakup and washout long-standing bowel encrustations. Diet may do the same thing as an enema or colonic, it will just take longer. Also, one should be very diligent in repopulating after a total washout of the normal flora and probiotics will be necessary to restore that balance.

Maintaining a clean and healthy bowel is important to overall health – as the bowels play a major role in toxin elimination, including toxins that are passed to the bowels by the liver. In some cases, it may be necessary to administer an enema or colonic in order to break up impacted material in your bowels. A proper diet may also perform the same function over time. It is very important to repopulate the bowels with the normal flora after an enema or colonic – this helps maintain balance.

Slow or poorly functioning bowels are more common these days than they were 100 years ago – due to people eating better and tending to be much more active back then. Slow bowel movement prevents toxins from being properly eliminated – causing them to be reabsorbed by the body. In particular, cholesterol has been linked to the absorption of bile salts and constipation. Additionally, slow bowel movements also throw off the balance between the beneficial intestinal flora and potentially harmful organisms, which can lead to additional bowel problems.

The thyroid gland controls metabolism and affects bowel movements as a result. Constipation may possibly be caused by hypothyroidism, as well as low body temperature. Low body temperature can be caused by the thyroid functions being hindered due to high levels of mercury in the body that bind to thyroid hormones.

Bowel movements are easily stimulated by incorporating a high amount of fiber in your diet with fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also add extra fiber by adding psyllium husk powder to a glass of water. Additional fiber bulks up the stool and stimulates your bowels to move more quickly.

It is also beneficial to stimulate bowel movements by using herbal remedies. These can be very mild (such as slippery elm) or can be harsh (aloe or senna) – so it is recommended that you use caution with these when first taking them, due to every person reacting differently. Herbal remedies are recommended for their stimulant effects as well as being nutritious.

Enzymes

Enzymes play an important role in not only digestion, but also in detoxification. The best source of enzymes is fresh fruit and vegetables, but you may also take them in between meals in the form of nutritional supplements. Unfortunately, most foods today are cooked, refined or otherwise processed, which destroys these enzymes and prevents them from being used by the body. The food may still have nutritional value but the benefits are lessened without enzymes present.

The liver also creates or stores a number of detoxification enzymes to assist the body in breaking down and eliminating toxins. When taking enzymes, it is recommended that you take them in between meals for the best results. This allows them to be processed by the liver and blood rather than being digested along with the food you eat.

Enzymes have had important roles in numerous detoxification programs and have also played a major role in fighting cancer. Kelley, Gerson, Moerman and Neiper used enzymes as part of their cancer-fighting therapy. Laetrile cancer therapy utilized Wobe Mugos enzymes from Europe as well during the 1970s.

Detoxification diets that include raw foods make use of the enzymes that are naturally present in those foods before they are cooked. Raw foods are also an important source of fiber and will help to preserve the body’s own reserves of enzymes - helping you to overcome disease and prolong life. Vitamins and minerals are very important in supporting the role of enzymes - vitamins combine with enzymes while minerals are used to activate enzymes.

Enzymes are also important to bowel cleansing, as they assist in breaking down and liquefying foods – allowing them to pass more easily through the bowels. This has the effect of reducing transit time through the bowels and allowing toxins to be eliminated faster – possibly reducing constipation problems.

Detoxification

Detoxification refers to any number of programs intended to cleanse the body of toxins. Detoxification begins with diet, but detoxification can also include nutrients to strengthen the major  body organs as well as the blood.

Body detoxification generally refers to cleansing the intestines, liver, kidneys and lungs as well as the bloodstream - they are the organs that act to remove toxins from the body. The liver breaks down toxic substances into a safe form - allowing the kidneys to excrete them in urine, via the skin as sweat, the lungs via the air you exhale and the intestinal tract as fecal matter. In order for overall health to be maintained, these organs need to remain healthy as well.

There are various detox programs available which target various areas of the body and can be merged into a comprehensive program. This will allow not only good health to be maintained but provides energy. Although there are numerous approaches to detoxification, any program will contribute to overall wellness.

Vegetarian diets for detoxification assist the process in a number of ways: They provide dietary fiber, which helps ensure regular bowel movements. The necessary vitamins and minerals are also provided, allowing the liver and intestines to perform their functions. These diets also provide a source of digestive enzymes, due to most of these diets including raw ingredients. Eliminating meat from the diet also assists in the detoxification process, owing to the difficulty in digesting meat.

However, beginning and maintaining a detoxification program is easier said than done – it requires a high level of commitment. In order for a detoxification program to be successful, various things must be eliminated, including sugars (which are generally regarded as empty calories), meat (difficult to digest), possible allergy-causing foods such as wheat and dairy products, as well as junk foods.

If you are truly committed to seeking better health – a detoxification program can help you to achieve that goal.

Herbal Detoxification

General detoxification diets are an excellent way to maintain bodily health, but may not provide optimal fortification for the bodily organs. In that case, adding herbs to your diet can be very beneficial in targeting specific organs, as they also provide a source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

Herbs can be used at any time, but it is highly recommended that they be combined with a detoxification diet for the best results. For example, taking herbs to strengthen the liver should not be done if your diet includes refined or processed foods that are slow to digest.

They come in a number of forms, including teas, extracts or powders. Powders are generally provided in capsules and are best taken with meals and digestive enzymes. Extracts are beneficial, but care should be taken with them, as some herbs are extracted using alcohol – which should be avoided when undergoing a detoxification diet. Herb teas are easy to make and can be drunk throughout the course of your day, though it may take some experimentation to determine which tea is best for you.

There are a number of herb combinations that can help fortify specific body organs, including:

Liver

Dandelion, red beet, liverwort, parsley, horsetail, birch leaves, chamomile, blessed thistle, black cohosh, angelica, gentian, goldenrod

Kidneys

Uva ursi, dandelion, juniper berries, parsley, marshmallow, ginger, goldenseal, dong quai, cedar berries

Lungs

Comfrey, marshmallow, mullein, slippery elm, senega, Chinese ephedra

An example of an herbal cleanse might include something like the following:

When you wake up in the morning, drink a glass of water with lemon or drink a glass of water with the following added: one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of blackstrap molasses.

In the morning: Drink a glass of water with psyllium husk powder, and follow this with another glass of water.

At mealtimes, you can take 2-3 multi-digestive enzymes as well as taking liver herbs. In between meals, you could drink herbal teas that support liver function, which includes dandelion, licorice, ginger, and fennel.

Skin Cleansing

A detoxification program should also include skin care, as the skin plays an important role in eliminating toxins from the body. Sweating helps purge heavy metals through your pores – making a sauna or a hot bath an excellent way to help detoxify. Taken as a whole – your sweat glands can perform the same amount of work as one or both kidneys. Therefore, taking good care of your skin can, by extension, help your kidneys work more effectively.

It is also important to take care of your skin to maintain good overall health. The chemicals found in many skin care products can be absorbed through the skin and cause more build-up of toxins and other substances to be removed. You may not notice any ill effects since the liver removes these substances, but it is advisable to consider using natural skin and hair care products that do not contain any potentially toxic materials.

A skin care regimen is very simple to implement. Wash your body every day using only soap that contains natural ingredients. The skin should be treated using only natural oils and other natural products. Additionally, a change in the clothing you wear can make a big difference. Synthetic cloth doesn’t absorb toxin-containing sweat, whereas cotton (or other natural materials) does. It is also recommended that you brush your dry skin, which helps to remove dead skin cells and opens your pores. An effective means of skin brushing is to towel off roughly after bathing – do this until the skin is slightly red. You will also need to change your towels regularly as they will absorb toxins.

A proper diet is also paramount in maintaining healthy skin – you will want to make sure you get plenty of natural oils in your diet, such as olive oil and butter.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin A and Vitamin E are an important part of the detoxification process. They help prevent free radicals from causing damage to cells or even cellular mutations. Vitamin C is also valuable to other bodily functions including wound healing, forming collagen and fighting colds. Vitamins E and A are fat-soluble, so they will typically be found in your body’s fat deposits, whereas Vitamin C is water-soluble and is typically found in the skin.

A deficiency in antioxidants can cause health problems including a lack of energy, since the body cannot detoxify without antioxidants. This leads to a build-up of toxins in the body as the liver and other organs are unable to perform their functions properly.

When taking Vitamin C - it should be taken with bioflavinoids, which help ensure that your body can use the vitamin. Pure Vitamin C is known as ascorbic acid and is not useful alone - the body requires the Vitamin C complex to gain any benefit from the vitamin - including energy production.

When taking Vitamin C, it is suggested that you escalate the dosage level until you reach your tolerance level. This level can be as high as 10-15 grams (10,000 to 15,000 milligrams) for some people while other people may only be able to take 4-5 grams (4,000 milligrams to 5,000 milligrams) before their tolerance level is reached. Cancer patients may need to take as much as 20-30 grams of Vitamin C to reach their tolerance level - indicating that they need much more to fight off the disease. Vitamin C has been shown by Linus Pauling and Ewan Cameron to be very effective in fighting cancer.

Taking such high doses of Vitamin C will allow you to not only determine your tolerance level but also determine how much Vitamin C is currently in your body.
